22 people were found dead in a South African tavern, officials said

PRETORIA, South Africa and LONDON – At least 22 people were found dead in a South African tavern early Sunday morning, officials said.

The South African Police Service said they were found dead at a local tavern in Scenery Park in the East London area, said police spokesman Brig. Tembinkosi Kinana.

“We received this report in the early morning. The circumstances of the incident were being investigated,” Kinana said. “We don’t want to speculate at this stage because our investigation is still ongoing.”

Police responded at the Enyobeni pub at 4 a.m. local time, Kinana said, and this afternoon investigated the site to find evidence. Scenery Park is located in the East London Province of South Africa.

Kinana said he had been dead for 20 years.

The youngest victim was 13 years old, a spokesman for the South African police, Col. Athlenda Mathe to journalists.
